…And one from London!

The husband and I traveled to Europe early this year and one of the cities that we stopped at was London. We were there during Kate & William’s wedding but traveling to Buckingham Palace just to catch a glimpse proved to be complete idiocy so we watched it in the comfort of the Hilton hotel room under our blankets early on 8+am.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

Enough about that. The London weather was perfect those few days we were there with only slight drizzles on one day. We searched for good places to go for food and the husband, always the resourceful one, found…… Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (read about its history here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ye_Olde_Cheshire_Cheese)

I have to take my hat off to him for always being able to find the quaintest, authentic, special places to take me to and experience the food. Amazing.

It took us some time to find it but BOY WAS IT WORTH IT. We entered the dingy, cold, unassuming looking pub and was greeted by the sound of chatter, glasses clinking, cutlery on plates and bustling staff. There were woodshaves on the floor that gave it an old-London feel. The flooring was uneven as we descended the stairs to the tavern or dungeon-looking rooms and hideaways. Rustic wooden tables and benches were part of the furniture and it did really feel like we were all just transported back to the 17th century, just with the wrong clothing.

Goat's Cheese Gratin on Apple Salad

First up we had the Goat’s Cheese Gratin in Apple Salad which proved to be a little too cheesy and strong in taste for my palate. However, it was something that was unique and taste-bud teasing to have a mix of cheese with the sweetness of the apple on a bed of fresh greens tossed in a tangy sauce.

Next up were interesting ones too. We had Scotch Roast Beef, served with Horseradish Sauce, Roast Potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding. The beef slices were generously large though a little fatty, but were tender, soft to cut and literally did melt in ones mouth. The horseradish sauce was a little spicy but was quite yummy was the pudding on the side.

The 2nd main-dish that we had was the Pot Roast Shank of Lamb, with Mashed Potatoes and Onion Gravy. The Lamb was oozing with goodness as we ploughed into it and the gravy complemented the lamb shank very, very well. If I recall correctly, the husband was very impressed and loved the bed of mashed potatoes under it. We were so full after these dishes.
